Magnaflux Y-7 - AC/DC Yoke

Magnaflux Y-7 MV Kit comes complete with a Y-7 yoke, #1 Gray and #8A Red magnetic powders, a paint marker and shop cloth in a convenient carrying case.

The Magnaflux Y-7 is a durable, high-strength AC/DC magnetic yoke designed to detect surface and sub-surface indications in the most rugged applications.

Featuring sealed chemical-resistant construction, articulating legs to contour to any part shape and robust strain-relieved twelve-foot cord for field use, the Magnaflux Y-7 is ideal for inspection of welds and other remote testing.

Solid-state controls allow the operator to use AC magnetic fields for surface indications or DC magnetic fields for sub-surface indications to meet all inspection needs.

OPERATION

1. Connect yoke to power supply / battery pack.

2. Y-7 Model Only: Select AC or DC operating mode using switch on back of yoke. WARNING: Do not operate selector switch while yoke is energized.

3. Position yoke legs at right angles to the direction of suspected discontinuities. Adjust legs as needed for best contact with surface.

4. Depress trigger to energize yoke. Apply magnetic particles to area between legs.

a. If using dry powder, blow off excess while yoke is energized to reveal indications.

b. If using fluorescent particles, view surface with UV-A in darkened environment to reveal indications.

5. Evaluate indications for size, shape, and relevant location.

6. Reposition yoke legs at 90-degrees to previous position and repeat steps 4-5 to reveal indications in all directions.

7. Y-6 and Y-7 Models Only: Demagnetize by energizing yoke then slowly withdrawing it from the surface, up to 18 in / 45 cm distance. NOTE: For Y-7 model only, use AC mode for demagnetization.

Frequently Asked Questions: Magnaflux Y-7 AC/DC Magnetic Particle Yoke Kit

Q: What is the main advantage of an AC/DC yoke like the Magnaflux Y-7?
A: The primary advantage is versatility in defect detection. The AC mode is ideal for surface-breaking cracks, while the DC (Direct Current) mode provides deeper penetration to locate sub-surface discontinuities. This makes the Y-7 the industry standard for demanding inspections in power plants, refineries, and fabrication shops. To ensure your yoke is meeting the required magnetic pull, we recommend using an Certified Test Weight.

Q: Does the Y-7 Yoke Kit include everything needed for field inspections?
A: Yes. The Magnaflux Y-7 Kit is a complete, portable "inspection station." It includes the AC/DC yoke, #1 Gray and #8 Red Dry Magnetic Powders, a paint marker and cleaning towel for fast cleanup—all housed in a rugged carrying case.

Q: What is the lift capacity for the Y-7 in both modes?
A: In compliance with ASTM E1444 and ASME Section V, the Magnaflux Y-7 provides a lifting capacity of at least 10 lbs (4.5 kg) in AC mode and 30 lbs to 50 lbs (13.5 to 22.5 kg) in DC mode, depending on pole spacing. Regular verification with at least 30 lbs of Certified Test Weights is essential for DC compliance.

Q: Can I use fluorescent wet method particles with the Y-7?
A: Absolutely. While the kit comes with dry powders, the Y-7 is excellent for high-sensitivity wet method testing. For inspections in low-light environments, many technicians pair the Y-7 with Magnaflux 14A Aqua-Glo and a portable UV-A LED Torchlight to find the finest surface indications.

Q: How do I switch between AC and DC modes on the Y-7?
A: The Y-7 features a convenient rocker switch located on the yoke body. This allows the operator to switch instantly between AC for surface cracks and DC for sub-surface flaws without having to return to a power supply or change equipment, significantly increasing efficiency on the job site. Note: switching between AC and DC should only be performed when the yoke is de-energized.
