Intro

SKD-S2 is a fast-drying, solvent-based, bright-white developer used in dye penetrant testing to reveal surface flaws with high contrast. It pulls penetrant out of cracks and pores, forming a visible white background that makes flaws easier to see. This ensures reliable inspections in aerospace, automotive, oil & gas, and general industry.

Quick Specs

When to Use SKD-S2

SKD-S2 is ideal when you need fast, reliable flaw detection with excellent contrast:

  • Welds β€” stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum
  • Castings β€” aluminum, magnesium, titanium
  • Machined parts β€” high-precision aerospace and automotive components
  • Field inspections β€” fast-drying film for on-site work

How to Apply SKD-S2

Follow these steps for consistent, reliable results:

  1. Clean and dry the surface thoroughly.
  2. Apply penetrant and allow correct dwell time.
  3. Remove excess penetrant according to the process standard.
  4. Shake the can well. Spray SKD-S2 from 8–12 inches (20–30 cm) in light, even passes.
  5. Allow developer to dry. A thin, uniform white coating should form.
  6. Examine the surface under proper lighting β€” flaws appear as bright or colored bleed-out.
  7. After inspection, clean part as required.

Tip: Apply in thin coats β€” too much developer can mask fine flaws.

Coverage & Cost Efficiency

One 12 oz aerosol can typically covers 50–75 ftΒ² with a thin, uniform film.

  • Example: 3 medium weldments (15–20 ftΒ² each) per can.
  • Larger packages (5 gal, 55 gal) are best for high-volume shop use.

SKD-S2 vs. Other Developers

Developer Type Pros Cons Best For
Solvent-based (SKD-S2) Fast-drying, excellent contrast, easy field use Flammable, requires ventilation Field work, aerospace inspections
Dry powder No solvent hazards, stable Lower sensitivity on smooth parts High-temp parts, rough surfaces
Water-based Safer handling, non-flammable Slower drying, less portable Controlled shop environments

Troubleshooting & Pro Tips

  • Too much background color? β†’ Apply lighter coats, increase spray distance.
  • No indications forming? β†’ Check penetrant dwell/removal step, allow proper drying.
  • Film fogging or dripping? β†’ Spray in thin passes, avoid over-application.
  • Cleanup: Remove developer with approved cleaner (e.g., SKC-S).

Safety, Storage & Disposal

  • Flammable β€” keep away from sparks and flames.
  • Ventilation β€” always work in well-ventilated areas.
  • PPE β€” gloves and safety glasses recommended.
  • Storage β€” keep in a cool, dry place. Do not expose aerosols to heat.
  • Disposal β€” follow local hazardous waste regulations.

FAQs

Q: What is SKD-S2 used for?
A: It is used in dye penetrant testing to draw penetrant out of flaws and make them visible.

Q: Is it compatible with aluminum and stainless steel?
A: Yes β€” SKD-S2 works on most metals including aluminum, stainless, titanium, and magnesium.

Q: Does it meet AMS 2644?
A: Yes β€” SKD-S2 is listed on the AMS 2644 Qualified Products List (QPL).

Q: Can I use SKD-S2 outdoors?
A: Yes, but ensure good ventilation and avoid windy conditions.

Q: Aerosol vs bulk β€” which should I choose?
A: Aerosol is best for field use and small jobs. Bulk containers are cost-effective for shop use.

Real-World Examples

  • Field weld inspection β€” inspectors love the fast drying when working outdoors.
  • Machine shop incoming QC β€” easy to apply for quick spot checks.
  • Aerospace MRO β€” approved by primes, ensures compliance in critical repairs.
  • 3D scanning prep β€” thin white film improves optical scanning contrast.

Magnaflux SKD-S2 INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE:

SKD-S2 should be applied by spray only, since dipping or brushing will cause excessive solvent action on the penetrant in discontinuities. SKD-S2 may be applied by aerosol, or conventional spray gun. SKD-S2 must be agitated during use to ensure the developer particles remain suspended during processing.

Solvent-based developers like SKD-S2 should be sprayed in thin even layers, which just wet the surface. A heavy spray will cause excessive bleeding and running of indications; whereas too light a spray will result in slow indication development as well as possible loss in overall sensitivity due to limited solvent action.
