Product Overview

Magnaflux 14A Aqua-Glo is a ready-to-use, highly sensitive water-based magnetic particle aerosol designed for locating fine discontinuities in critical NDT applications. By combining the high-sensitivity of 14A particles with a convenient, non-flammable water-based carrier, Aqua-Glo is the industry standard for field inspections and spot-checking parts where bulk processing isn't feasible.

Why Choose 14A Aqua-Glo?

  • Maximum Sensitivity: Features 14A fluorescent particles that provide bright yellow-green indications under UV light, revealing even the finest fatigue cracks and seams.
  • Ready-to-Use Convenience: No mixing or measuring required. The portable aerosol format is ideal for field testing with a portable magnetic field generator.
  • Safety First: A non-flammable, water-based formula that meets strict safety requirements for confined spaces or high-risk environments.

Technical Specifications & Industry Compliance

Ensure your inspections meet the highest quality standards. 14A Aqua-Glo is compliant with the following industry standards:

  • AMS 3044
  • ASTM E1444 & ASTM E709
  • ASME BPVC
  • NAVSEA 250-1500-1

Common Applications:

  • In-service inspections of machined parts
  • Critical aerospace and automotive component testing
  • Detection of grinding cracks, inclusions, laps, and welding defects

Essential Accessories for Fluorescent MPI

To achieve an accurate inspection with 14A Aqua-Glo, we recommend the following complimentary equipment:

  • UV Inspection Lamps: Fluorescent particles require high-intensity ultraviolet light. We recommend the Magnaflux EV6000 LED UV Lamp for a wide, uniform beam.
  • Part Cleanliness: Create a clean inspection surface using Magnaflux SKC-S NDT-approved solvent cleaner
  • Field Strength Verification: Confirm your yoke's magnetic field strenght with a Magnaflux Certified Yoke Weight

Technician’s Insight: Why Choose Aqua-Glo for Field Inspections? While oil-based particles are the industry standard, Magnaflux 14A Aqua-Glo is the go-to choice for inspections in confined spaces or environments where flammable carriers are a safety concern. Because it is a pre-mixed, water-based aerosol, it eliminates the need for manual bath preparation and provides a more consistent particle concentration. For the brightest indications, we recommend using this with a high-intensity LED UV lamp like the Magnaflux EV6000, ensuring that even the finest surface cracks are visible under 365nm black light.

Defect location: Surface and slightly subsurface

Ideal for:

  • Field testing
  • Difficult to reach areas
  • Machined parts
  • Smooth surface finish
  • Critical applications
  • Spot inspections
  • In-service inspections

Defect examples:

  • Inclusions
  • Seams
  • Shrink cracks
  • Tears
  • Laps
  • Flakes
  • Welding defects
  • Grinding cracks
  • Quenching cracks
  • Fatigue cracks

SPECIFICATION COMPLIANCE

  • AMS 3044
  • ASTM E709
  • ASTM E1444
  • ASME
  • MIL-STD-2132
  • MIL-STD-271
  • NAVSEA 250-1500-1
  • NAVSEA T9074-AS-GIB-010/271

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

Use 14A Aqua-Glo with appropriate magnetization procedure and equipment.

Applications Tip:
14A Aqua-Glo is our top recommendation for field inspections where an oil-based carrier isn't feasible due to safety or cleanup requirements. It pairs perfectly with the Magnaflux EV6000 UV Lamp for maximum indication brightness.

For best results, all components, parts, or areas to be tested should be clean and dry prior to testing to provide an optimal test surface and reduce particle suspension contamination. Aerosol can should be shaken sufficiently to ensure uniformity of concentration prior to applying material to the part. The suspension can be applied by gently spraying or flooding the area to be tested using the continuous or residual application method. Inspect under ultra-violet black light. If specifications require, particle concentration can be checked using a settling volume test with a Magnaflux centrifuge tube 8493 with 100 mL capacity, stem graduated from 0 to 1 mL in 0.05 mL increments.

REMOVAL

All components, parts, or inspection areas must be properly demagnetized before cleaning to ensure easy particle removal. Cleaned parts may be treated with a temporary film protective coating if longer corrosion protection is required.

Q: When should I use 14A Aqua-Glo (Water-Based) vs. 14AM (Oil-Based)?

A: The choice depends on your environment and part surface. 14A Aqua-Glo is non-flammable and easier to clean, making it ideal for field use and areas with strict fire safety regulations. However, because it is water-based, it requires the part to be thoroughly degreased. 14AM (Oil-Based) is better for parts that may have a light oily film or where corrosion/rusting from water contact is a major concern.

Q: Does 14A Aqua-Glo require a separate water conditioner?

A: No. Unlike 14A powder, which requires Magnaflux WA-2B Water Conditioner to help with wetting and corrosion inhibition, Aqua-Glo is a "ready-to-use" aerosol. The wetting agents and conditioners are already pre-mixed in the can.

Q: How do I verify the sensitivity of the 14A particles before testing?

A: To ensure your system is working correctly, you should use a standardized test piece. We recommend using a Magnaflux Test Ring or Ketos Ring. These tools allow you to verify that both the magnetic field strength and the particle sensitivity of the Aqua-Glo are sufficient to find the required flaw sizes.

Q: Can Aqua-Glo be used for "Dry Method" inspections?

A: No. Aqua-Glo is a "Wet Method" fluorescent suspension. Dry method testing typically uses Magnetic Powders in visible colors (like Red or Grey) and is generally less sensitive for finding very fine surface cracks compared to the wet fluorescent method provided by 14A particles.

Q: What is the proper viewing environment for 14A Aqua-Glo?

A: Because these are fluorescent particles, the inspection must be performed in a darkened area (maximum 2 foot-candles of white light) using a UV-A light source. The UV light should have a minimum intensity of 1000 microwatts per square centimeter
at the part surface to ensure the yellow-green indications are clearly visible.

Q: How many inspections can I get out of one case of 12 aerosol cans?

A: Coverage varies based on the size of the parts and the application technique. On average, one 16 oz. aerosol can provides enough suspension for approximately 50 to 100 square feet of "spot" inspection. To maximize coverage, ensure the magnetizing current is active while applying the spray to "trap" the particles at the site of the flaw.
