Primary Visible Dye Penetrant Products
1. SKL-SP2 (Solvent Removable)
SKL-SP2 is a solvent removable visible penetrant for Type 2, Method B, Method C and Method D dye penetrant testing, QPL SAE AMS 2644.
Key Features:
- Produces a visible red color contrast, and features outstanding penetrating characteristics
- Solvent removable penetrant for portability, especially for welding operations, and is post emulsifiable for greater resolution of flaw indications
- Rich, vivid red dye penetrant for Type 2 penetrant testing in visible white light
- Designed to provide complete, consistent test-surface coverage with minimal product
Applications:
- Developed for preventative maintenance, control checks and weld inspection
- Locates surface flaws and discontinuities with a simple three-step process. Ideal for basic industrial NDT
- Portable applications and field testing
- Welding operations inspection
2. SKL-WP2 (Water Washable)
SKL-WP2 is a water washable visible penetrant for Type 2, Method A and Method C dye penetrant testing, QPL SAE AMS 2644.
Key Features:
- Bright red penetrant designed for large surface areas and rough surfaces where excess penetrant is difficult to remove with a solvent removable cleaner or emulsifier
- Red visible dye, low odor, water washable penetrant that exhibits outstanding penetrating characteristics and discontinuity identification
- Water wash removable, this item eliminates the need for solvent removers or emulsifiers
Applications:
- Developed for large surface areas and rough surfaces
- Applications where solvent removal is difficult or impractical
- High-volume production environments
- Environmental-sensitive applications
3. SKL-4C (Water-Based Dual-Purpose)
Water-based visible/fluorescent (dual-purpose) penetrant for penetrant testing.
Key Features:
- Specially designed for chemically sensitive plastic parts, and for leak detection, SKL-4C is a red dye visible penetrant that is water based and water washable
- Indications appear dark purple-red in visible light and fluorescent orange in ultraviolet light. This allows dual range flexibility in the inspection process
- SKL-4C can be diluted with water, although it is recommended that a dilution ratio of 1:1 is used for general purposes
- Dual-range flexibility allowing inspection under both visible light and UV light conditions
Specialized Applications:
- Specially designed for chemically sensitive plastic parts
- Leak detection and ceramic and plastic applications
- As with most plastic parts, it is recommended that a trial application be used to confirm compatibility
- Dual inspection capability (visible and fluorescent)
- Applications requiring gentle, water-based formulations
General Applications and Uses
Surface Defect Detection
Liquid Penetrant Inspection detects fine surface defects and flaws in non-porous materials, such as steel, aluminium, copper, plastics, ceramics & castings.
Inspection Method
- Visible dye penetrant testing method according to ASTM E1417, including basic steps for NDT with an AMS 2644 Type 2 penetrant
- Three-step process: Apply penetrant, remove excess, apply developer
- Visible under normal white light (no UV lighting required)
- SKL-4C offers dual inspection capability under both visible and UV light
Industry Applications
- Weld inspection and quality control
- Preventative maintenance programs
- Manufacturing quality assurance
- Field inspection and portable testing
- Aerospace and automotive component testing
- Plastic and ceramic component inspection (SKL-4C)
- Leak detection applications (SKL-4C)
- General industrial NDT applications
Key Advantages of Visible/Color-Contrast Penetrants
- No Special Lighting Required: Unlike fluorescent penetrants, visible dye penetrants can be inspected under normal white light
- Portability: Ideal for field testing and remote locations
- Cost-Effective: No need for UV lamps or darkroom conditions
- Easy Interpretation: Red contrast against white developer background provides clear visual indication
- Versatile Application: Suitable for various materials and surface conditions
- Dual-Purpose Capability: SKL-4C offers both visible and fluorescent inspection options
- Material Compatibility: SKL-4C specially formulated for sensitive plastic and ceramic materials
- Compliance: Meet industry specifications including AMS 2644 and ASTM E1417
Conclusion
These visible/color-contrast penetrants are essential tools for detecting surface-breaking discontinuities in non-porous materials, providing reliable, cost-effective inspection solutions for a wide range of industrial applications, with SKL-4C offering unique capabilities for specialized materials and dual inspection requirements.
