Getting the Most from Your Y-2 AC Yoke: The Y-2 is an AC-only yoke, optimized specifically for surface-breaking defect detection. AC creates a “skin effect” that concentrates the magnetic field at the part surface — making it highly sensitive to tight surface cracks, grinding cracks, and fatigue cracks.
For best results, orient the yoke legs perpendicular to the suspected defect direction — a crack parallel to the magnetic field will not be detected. Perform two passes at 90° to each other to ensure full coverage of the inspection area.
Always verify lifting force before each inspection shift using a certified yoke test weight. Per ASTM E1444, AC yokes must lift a minimum of 10 lb (4.5 kg) to be considered serviceable.
