Magnaflux Y-2 AC Electromagnetic Yoke

The Magnaflux Y-2 is an AC electromagnetic yoke engineered for surface indication detection during magnetic particle testing (MPI). Ergonomically designed to reduce operator arm and wrist fatigue, the Y-2 generates a strong AC magnetic field while keeping inspectors comfortable and productive through long inspection shifts. Built for the rugged demands of field inspection, it features an IP54-sealed housing, field-swappable power cord, and isolated replaceable trigger switch — so a damaged cord never stops a job.

Benefits

Increase Inspector Productivity & Reduce Physical Fatigue

  • Lightweight, ergonomic grip and trigger reduce arm strain and wrist fatigue during extended inspections
  • Easily position the yoke in any direction with lightweight, heavy-duty electronics components

Keep Tools in Service with a Design Built to Last

  • Field-swappable power cord and replaceable trigger switch mean work doesn’t stop due to accidental damage
  • IP54 o-ring sealed housing prevents dust and water ingress in demanding environments

Features

  • Ergonomic, Lightweight Design: Reduces operator fatigue during high-volume inspections
  • IP54 Sealed Housing: Resists dust and water for reliable field performance
  • Field-Swappable Power Cord: Replace in the field without taking the tool out of service
  • Isolated, Replaceable Trigger Switch: Serviceable design extends tool life
  • Steel Shields for Leg Protection: Durable construction for heavy-duty use
  • Exceeds ASTM E1444 Lifting Specifications: Verified magnetic field strength for compliant inspections
  • Carrying Case Included: Convenient case supplied with all yoke shipments
  • Optional LED Yoke Light: Longer-lasting, more intense illumination vs. traditional bulbs
Pro NDT Tip

Verify Lift Force at the Start of Every Shift: Per ASTM E1444, AC yokes must demonstrate a minimum 10 lb (4.5 kg) lifting force before use. Test your Y-2 with a Magnaflux Certified Yoke Test Weight (PN 624115) at the start of each shift and after any drop or impact. Place the yoke legs at the maximum pole spacing you intend to use during inspection — if it passes at maximum spacing, it passes at all shorter spacings. A yoke that fails the lift test must be removed from service immediately.

Applications

  • Surface defect detection on welds, castings, forgings, and machined components
  • Field and in-service MPI inspections with AC power access
  • Aerospace, automotive, pipeline, and structural inspection
  • Dry and wet method MPI with compatible magnetic particles

SPECIFICATION COMPLIANCE

  • ASME BPVC
  • ASTM E709
  • ASTM E1444
  • ASTM E3024
  • ISO 9934-3
  • MIL-STD-271

OPERATION

1. Attach power cord, making sure connection is secure. Connect the power supply to line power.

2. Position yoke legs at right angles to the direction of suspected discontinuities. Adjust legs as needed for best contact with surface.

3. Depress trigger to energize yoke. Apply magnetic particles to area between legs. While energized, blow off excess powder to reveal indications.

4. Evaluate indications for size, shape, and relevant locations.

5. Reposition yoke legs at 90-degrees to previous position and repeat steps 2-3 to reveal indications in all directions.

6. Demagnetize by slowly withdrawing yoke from surface, up to 18 in / 45 cm distance, while yoke is energized.

7. OPTIONAL YOKE LIGHT: To install, slide over the rear leg with LEDs facing in. Push up onto the housing until tabs are secured. Yoke light will automatically operate when yoke is energized. To remove, pull sides out and down to disengage tabs, then slide off. No tools are necessary for installation or removal.

MAINTENANCE

  • Use mild soap and a damp cloth to clean the yoke housing
  • Do not immerse any part of yoke in liquid
  • Legs may be detached at the joints for cleaning
  • Use a rust-preventative spray (LPS-3 or equivalent) on legs for lubrication

Frequently Asked Questions: Magnaflux Y-2 Magnetic Particle Yoke

Q: What is the lift capacity of the Magnaflux Y-2 Yoke?
A: The Y-2 AC Yoke is designed to meet and exceed industry specifications. It provides a lifting power of at least 10 lbs (4.5 kg) at a 4-inch to 6-inch pole spacing, which is the standard requirement for AC yokes under ASTM E1444 and ASME Section V. To verify your yoke’s performance in the field, we recommend using a certified 10 lb. AC Test Weight.

Q: Can the Y-2 Yoke be used for both Dry and Wet Method inspections?
A: Yes. The Y-2 is highly versatile. It can be used with Dry Magnetic Powders for rough surface inspections or with Fluorescent Wet Method aerosols for high-sensitivity detection of fine surface cracks.

Q: How do I verify the magnetic field strength of the Y-2 Yoke during an inspection?

A: To ensure you are achieving proper magnetic field direction and strength on the part surface, you should use a Pie Gauge or Magnetic Field Meters. These tools are placed on the workpiece while the Y-2 is energized to provide a visual verification that the magnetic field is adequate for the specific orientation of the suspected defects.

Q: Is the Y-2 Yoke cord replaceable?
A: Yes. One of the primary design improvements of the Y-2 over the older Y-1 model is the field-replaceable power cord. If the cord becomes frayed or damaged during heavy use, you can easily swap it out without having to replace the entire unit or send it in for extensive electrical repair. In addition, the Y-2 yoke features an isolated switch housing making switch replacement simple and fast without comprimising the yoke IP rating.

Q: What is the benefit of the Y-2’s articulating legs?
A: The articulating legs allow the operator to adjust the contact footprint to fit the geometry of the part. This is essential for inspecting welds in corners, on curved pipe surfaces, or on irregularly shaped castings where a fixed-leg yoke would fail to make proper magnetic contact.
