Step-by-Step Inspection Guide

Step 1: Pre-Cleaning

The most common reason for a failed inspection is a dirty surface. Paint, oil, grease, and slag can block the penetrant from entering defects. Start by applying Magnaflux SKC-S Cleaner/Remover to the weld area. Wipe it thoroughly with a lint-free cloth until the metal is clean and dry. Allow the solvent to evaporate completely before moving to the next step.

Step 2: Apply Penetrant

Once the part is clean and dry, spray Magnaflux SKL-SP2 Penetrant over the inspection area. You need a uniform, wet coating that covers the weld and Heat Affected Zone (HAZ). Let the penetrant dwell on the surface for 10 to 30 minutes. This "dwell time" allows the dye to seep deep into any hairline cracks.

Step 3: Remove Excess Penetrant

This is the most critical step. You need to remove the dye from the surface without removing it from the cracks.

  1. Wipe the surface with a clean, dry cloth to remove the bulk of the red dye.
  2. Dampen a fresh cloth with SKC-S Cleaner/Remover.
  3. Gently wipe the surface until the red background is gone and only the metal remains.

Crucial Rule: Never spray the cleaner directly onto the part at this stage, as you might wash the penetrant out of the defects.

Step 4: Apply Developer

  • Continuous Line: Indicates a crack.
  • Dotted Line: Indicates a tight crack or cold shut.
  • Round Spots: Indicates porosity or pitting.
