Magnaflux Y-7 AC/DC Electromagnetic Yoke Kit – 115V
The Magnaflux Y-7 Kit is a complete, field-ready magnetic particle inspection kit built around the Y-7 — a durable, high-strength AC/DC electromagnetic yoke designed for the most rugged inspection applications. Solid-state controls allow the operator to switch between AC magnetic fields for surface indications and DC magnetic fields for sub-surface indications, making the Y-7 the most versatile yoke in the Magnaflux lineup.
Featuring sealed chemical-resistant construction, articulating legs to contour to any part shape, and a robust strain-relieved 12-foot cord, the Y-7 is ideal for weld inspection and remote field testing. Each yoke carries an individual serial number for full traceability.
Kit Contents
- Magnaflux Y-7 AC/DC Electromagnetic Yoke (115V)
- #1 Gray Magnetic Powder — High-contrast dry method powder for dark or standard metal surfaces
- #8A Red Magnetic Powder — Sharp contrast on light-colored or shiny metal surfaces
- Paint Marker — For marking and documenting discovered indications
- Shop Cloth — For quick cleanup in the field
- Carrying Case — Rugged, organized case for transport and storage
Key Features
- Dual AC/DC Operation: Switch between AC (surface indications) and DC (sub-surface indications) to meet all inspection requirements with a single tool
- Sealed Chemical-Resistant Construction: Withstands harsh field environments including exposure to MPI chemicals and contaminants
- Articulating Legs: Contour to any part shape for reliable magnetic contact on complex geometries
- Strain-Relieved 12-Foot Cord: Built for rugged field use with extended reach
- Serialized: Individual serial number on each yoke for traceability and calibration records
- Exceeds ASTM E1444 Lifting Specifications: Certified lifting force for compliant AC and DC MPI inspections
- Solid-State Controls: Reliable, durable electronics housed internally for maximum safety
When to Use AC vs. DC on the Y-7: The Y-7’s dual-mode capability is one of its most powerful features — but knowing when to switch modes is critical for reliable defect detection.
Use AC mode for detecting surface-breaking defects. AC creates a "skin effect" that concentrates the magnetic field at the part surface, making it highly sensitive to tight surface cracks, grinding cracks, and fatigue cracks. AC also provides a slight particle-agitating effect that helps particles migrate to indications.
Use DC mode when you need to detect sub-surface defects or inspect through coatings and paint. DC produces a deeper, more uniform magnetic field that penetrates further into the material — ideal for finding subsurface inclusions, laminations, or defects beneath non-conductive coatings.
Remember: DC yokes require a minimum 40 lb (18 kg) lift force per ASTM E1444, vs. 10 lb for AC. Always verify with a certified yoke test weight in the appropriate mode before beginning inspection.
Applications
- Weld inspection on pipelines, pressure vessels, and structural steel
- Surface and sub-surface defect detection on castings, forgings, and machined parts
- In-service inspection of aerospace and industrial components
- Remote field inspections requiring extended cord reach
- Inspections requiring both AC and DC magnetization from a single tool
